We are continuously in contact with a paper conservator in relation to our packaging materials, and our transparent photo envelopes have undergone a PAT test and can therefore be used for photographic storage. Photographic material stored in transparent envelopes must be kept away from sunlight and moisture.
Storage materials for photographic material is a matter of much discussion among paper conservators. Many believe that the best material for photo storage is exclusively PAT tested paper. However, some choose transparent materials such as this transparent envelope. Alternatively, some choose our completely clear polyester materials if the photographic material must be able to be observed without touching the material itself. Likewise, some choose cheaper packaging materials as long as they are PAT tested because this is the only economic option. Some choose to use the very best materials for the very best items in the collection and use cheaper materials for less important items in the collection. Elsewhere, the very best materials are used for all objects in the collection. You can therefore say that 'the waters part' in relation to the professional approach to the objects and packaging materials.
In the Museum Service, we ensure that the materials we have in our warehouse are PAT tested and suitable for storing photographic material.
